STAGGERING FACTS TO CONSIDER...
- The Workforce has drastically changed the way
they search for jobs today.
- The global labor shortage and war for talent - Bureau
of Labor Statistics - reports a projected employee gap
of 23 Million workers.
- 19% of the workforce holding executive, administrative,
and management jobs will retire in next 5 years. Vacancies include 49K nonprofit managers, 60K nonprofit executives.
- Prime Workers 24 - 54 years old will decrease 6%
over the next 10 years.
- 70% of the workforce is hourly. 50% of all hourly hires last
less than 5 months. 75% of all hourly hires last
less than 1 year
- US Labor Department reports turnover rates for hourly workers have an average turnover rate which is four times
higher than their exempt counterparts.
- Severe wage disparity between public and private
sector workers in the human service industry
(i.e. CT at 57% wage disparity).
- Turnover rates nationally range between 50% to 75%
in health & human services. Some agencies report
turnover rates amongst DSPs over 100%.
- US Dept of Health & Human Services report to
Congress January 2006 - due to the shortage
of DSPs supporting individuals with ID/DD.
- Estimated 4.3 million Americans with ID/DD living
in residential settings, their own homes, or with
members of family.
- DHHS estimates that by 2020 the number of DSPs needed will grow to 1.2 million FTEs, providing
services to 1.4 million individuals with ID/DD served in a home or Day program setting.
- Vacancy rates nationally are between 10% - 11%
- Between 2003 and 2020 the number of DSPs needed for the growth of Long Term Support Services (LTSS) will increase 37%.
- Factors affecting this need include the growing population, increased life expectancy, increased prevalence of ID/DD (autism pandemic), aging caregivers (family growing older), national commitment to steady expansion of community services (integration)
- Studies show 19,000 new FTEs will need to be added each year to meet this growing need beside filling vacancies due to turnover.
Even in a desperate economy, the human service industry will always require sufficient levels of quality staff to provide critical care and program services.
